THE DOOR TO VALMARECCHIA
Santarcangelo di Romagna is considered the door to the splendid Valmarecchia; it is located a few kilometers from Rimini and is a pretty, lively town, which preserves the typical structure of a fortified medieval village, with the Malatesta fortress lying on the side of Colle Giove (Giove hill). Taking a walk through the paved alleys and stairways you can still breathe the atmosphere of the ancient villages, in a succession of restaurants, wine bars, food and artisan shops. Here there is also a spheristerio, that is a field for tamburello, a ball game, one of the few preserved in its original form, which is still used for costume tournaments. Santarcangelo is also a mysterious city, since in the subsoil there is an underground village of ancient origins: about 150 caves (hypogea) excavated in the sandstone and clay, from which the name of the Sangiovese wine is said to have originated. Anyone who visits it is fascinated by this village and sooner or later wants to return.
